FURTHER INFORMATION

Daniel Lucanus

With dedicated and enthusiastic teaching staff combined with the opportunity to study in-country, the Indonesian major provides students with a strong understanding of the language, and the political, social, economic and environmental spheres of Australia's most important neighbour.

INDNB Indonesian major

The Indonesian major enables you to achieve a high level of fluency in the language of Australia's closest neighbour and the world's fourth largest country. Indonesian is a relatively easy language to learn as it uses the Roman script and is simple to spell and pronounce. As a result, Indonesian is a popular choice for beginners. People have written and spoken Indonesian since ancient times, leaving a rich legacy of literature and poetry. As well as learning how to speak, read and write Indonesian, you will be enriched through exposure to this fascinating and dynamic culture. You will have the exciting opportunity to spend a semester studying at an Indonesian university—a life-changing experience not to be missed.

This major is taken by beginners. It is incompatible with a pass in WACE Indonesian: Second Language IND2A/2B or higher.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) speak well enough to give an unprepared speech of several minutes on familiar events or topics; (2) take part in quite complex conversations on abstract things and substantiate their own opinions and discuss those of others; (3) adjust speech to suit familiar situations with respects to formality of occasions and age of person/s with whom a conversation is being held; and (4) express in writing, opinions about quite complex issues.

To plan the first year of your study without nominating a degree-specific major, you are advised to choose units that will pave the way to two or more degree-specific majors that are of interest to you. For examples of the choice of units available in first year, search the first-year study plans .

To fully understand the structure of an undergraduate course, read the course structure information and the Undergraduate Degree Course Rules.
