The Faculty of Law at UWA welcomes you to undergraduate study. The study of law is an intellectual and emotional challenge which requires you to think about how individuals and society approach all the joys and problems of life—wherever there is life, there has to be law. The critical requirement of the study of law is that you take up this challenge and develop your own questions and answers to the myriad of problems that come in the law and in life. Accordingly, the Law School's objective is not to give you, nor for you to remember, lots of information. Rather, it is to allow you to start developing your own skills in critical legal analysis so that in the practice of law you can understand and assess the merits of the courts' opinions, other lawyers' arguments or the Parliament's legislation. The staff members of the Faculty wish you well in your endeavours for this academic year.
