Unit Overview

Description

In preparation for their first professional practice, students attend lectures and workshops to introduce them to the diverse nature of teachers' work and the competencies required for teaching and management of the learning environment. Students undertake 35 days of teaching practice (one six week block). Professional practice experiences occur within government and non-government schools and educational settings under the guidance of a mentor teacher who provides assistance in planning, delivering and evaluating lessons/activities and management of the learning environment. In addition, lectures and workshops prior to the practicum experience, build on student understandings about teaching to explore and develop further key professional competencies and issues including professional duties, ethical responsibilities and duty of care. The practicum is linked to other semester one and semester two units and assignments and focuses on the application of knowledge and skills acquired in them.
