Unit Overview

Description

Students undertake 30 days of professional teaching practice in an accredited government or non-government educational setting, under the guidance of a mentor teacher who provides assistance in planning learning experiences/lessons, programming, assessment and management of the learning environment. Students will also complete a capstone project based on their professional practice experience.

Students will attend workshops prior to their professional practice, to explore and build on key professional competencies and duties of the teaching profession.

Within the Master of Teaching Secondary course, students will take two professional placement units. Students will teach primarily in their major curriculum area. In EDUC5535 Professional Practice A Secondary, students will undertake 30 days of professional practice. In EDUC5536 Professional Practice B Secondary, students will undertake 30 days of professional practice and complete a capstone project. EDUC5535 must be completed before EDUC5536.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills and pedagogical understanding to independently plan, implement and assess learning programs in early childhood, primary or secondary educational settings.; (2) prepare purposeful and sequential learning experiences appropriate to a learning area, which cater for students with diverse backgrounds and are responsive to student needs, interests and ability.; (3) design and implement with confidence a variety of learning, assessment and instructional strategies and resources (including educational technologies).; (4) use a range and variety of appropriate techniques and strategies to manage and support students' learning.; (5) incorporate literacy and numeracy strategies to support learning appropriate to the learning area or context and students being taught.; (6) draw on a wide range of instructional strategies and resources (including educational technologies), to foster critical thinking and opportunities for independent and collaborative learning.; (7) use both informal and formal assessment strategies to monitor, assess, record and provide feedback on students' learning and the basis for future planning.; (8) display professional and ethical conduct, including high standards of self management and collaborative behaviours to establish productive and professional working relationships with peers, educators, and school and University staff.; (9) respond appropriately and act on advice from their mentors and University staff.; (10) participate in a range of teacher duties and demonstrate an awareness of the (legal, social and moral) responsibilities of pre-service teachers, teachers and schools.; (11) use reflective practice techniques to identify and evaluate aspects of practice as a basis for self-improvement.; and (12) demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes for professional practice as described by the National Professional Standards for graduate teachers..

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: professional practice report submitted by teacher mentors. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the professional practice report submitted by teacher mentors component.

This unit is assessed on an ungraded pass/ungraded failed basis. All assessment items must be successfully completed.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Note
Conditions for Professional Practice units:
1. A current Department of Education Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) and a Working with Children Clearance must be presented before any student undertakes professional practice in schools. If a clearance is not given a student must approach the Department of Education for permission to proceed (see Professional requirements). Students are required to read, sign and adopt the Graduate School of Education (GSE) Professional Code of Conduct.

2. Students must gain a pass grade on assessments in core and curriculum units in which they are concurrently enrolled.
  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of publication but may be subject to change.
  • All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are encouraged to register for free online support through GETSmart; to help themselves to the extensive range of resources on UWA's STUDYSmarter website; and to participate in WRITESmart and (ma+hs)Smart drop-ins and workshops.
  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
