Unit Overview

Description

This unit develops a patient-centred approach to the investigation and management of common foot pathologies of the forefoot, mid-foot and rearfoot. Students undertake advanced tuition in the selection of elective podiatric surgical procedures, the principles of internal fixation and post-operative care of the surgical patient. The diagnosis and management of post-operative complications is considered in a multidisciplinary context.

The unit gives students understanding of the scope of surgical podiatry in the Australian context by strategic podiatric clinical and surgical placements and hospital rotations. Students observe the appropriate selection of surgical procedures, observe operative procedures and perioperative patient management and are instructed in basic wound biopsy, wound closure and below-knee immobilisation techniques. The unit involves introductory podiatric surgery practical experience within the UWA Podiatry Clinic and selected clinical and surgical placements under the supervision of an academic staff member or designate. Theoretical instruction in selected forefoot and soft-tissue procedures, wound biopsy, suture and below-knee casting techniques is undertaken.
