  • Honours option in Agricultural Science [Bachelor of Science (Honours)]
This unit is designed to introduce students to the relevant concepts and principles in economics and business management and analytical tools in making strategic decisions in the agribusiness environment. The unit starts by exploring economic concepts and principles relevant for analysing strategic decisions in perfect competitive markets. The economic fundamentals of strategic management in agribusiness are explored by examining principles that underlie production decisions, the cost structure and profit maximization behavior of firms. Logistical and organizational issues that affect the size and scope of a firm and how decisions are made along the food value chains are examined. Students are also introduced to research methods in agribusiness.

The goal of this unit is to prepare students for professional endeavours that demand skills in managerial decision-making and communication in an agricultural related environment.
Students are able to (1) evaluate different strategic options for an agribusiness firm facing competition in the marketplace and (2) apply economic concepts, principles, and analytical tools to conduct industry analysis and competitive analysis for firms operating in agricultural environment.
Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) examination; (2) case study 1; and (3) case study 2. Further information is available in the unit outline.
