- In preparation for their second professional practice students attend lectures and workshops in classroom management. This is followed by a six-week (30 days) school placement in their major and minor curriculum areas. Students are expected to implement a variety of approaches and techniques in the classroom. Under the guidance of the mentor teacher and the University supervisor, they are encouraged to engage in reflective practice to develop their teaching styles and their confidence in management techniques. The University supervisor visits the student twice during the professional practice to provide constructive feedback and to assess the student's level of competence. While students have the support of a mentor teacher, a high level of commitment, independence and competence is expected of students at this stage of their pre-service education. Pre-service teachers are encouraged to participate in, and contribute to, the life of the school beyond their learning area.
- Students are able to (1) demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills and pedagogical understanding to independently plan, implement and assess learning programs in their curriculum major and in their curriculum minor; (2) plan and implement with confidence a variety of learning and teaching strategies and resources (including educational technologies) to cater for students with diverse backgrounds, range of abilities, social skills and motivation for learning; (3) design and implement with confidence a variety of e-learning, assessment and instructional strategies and resources (including educational technologies); (4) use a range and variety of appropriate techniques and strategies to manage and support student learning; (5) incorporate literacy and numeracy strategies to support learning appropriate to the learning area or context and students being taught; (6) draw on a wide range of instructional strategies and resources (including educational technologies), to foster critical thinking and opportunities for independent and collaborative learning; (7) use both informal and formal assessment strategies to monitor, assess, record and provide feedback on student learning as the basis for future planning; (8) display professional and ethical conduct, including high standards of self-management and collaborative behaviours to establish productive and professional working relationships with peers, school and University staff; (9) respond appropriately and act on advice from their mentors and University staff; (10) understand and comply with the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes which apply to pre-service teachers and teachers in educational settings; (11) use reflective practice techniques as a basis for self-improvement; and (12) demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes for professional practice as described by National Professional Standards for graduate teachers.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the professional Practice Reports from mentor teacher, supervisor and University reports component.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.

- Conditions for Professional Practice units:
(1) A current Department of Education National Police History Check and a Working with Children Clearance must be presented before any student undertakes professional practice in schools. If a clearance is not given the student must approach the Department of Education for permission to proceed (see Professional Requirements). Students are required to read, sign and adopt the Graduate Studies of Education Professional Code of Conduct.
(2) Students must gain a pass grade on assessments in core and curriculum units in which they are concurrently enrolled.
(3) Students must pass the Pre-service Teacher Language Competence Test. Unsatisfactory results are reviewed by a panel of three course coordinators.
