EMPL5514 Negotiation and Dispute Resolution

- This unit develops the student's understanding of the dynamics of negotiation and dispute resolution. It considers theoretical approaches to negotiation through the lens of different negotiation scripts. The unit considers the relevance of concepts such as distributive bargaining, integrative and interest based negotiation, phases in negotiation, strategy, mediation and third-party intervention in dispute resolution, cultural difference and ethics. There is a focus on negotiations in the Australian workplace relations context but the subject matter of the unit has application in other contexts. Teaching involves the application of theory and research to practice.
- Students are able to (1) demonstrate a practical and critical understanding of core concepts in the scholarly literature on negotiation; (2) learn to reflect critically on their own practice of negotiation, and in doing so, understand how to improve their skills as a negotiator; (3) apply negotiation skills through a series of class based case studies, role plays and other activities; and (4) gain further experience through working in group situations in exercises and assignment tasks.
