Unit Overview

Description

This unit follows on from INDO1405 Indonesian 5 and leads to INDO2407 Indonesian 7. It is designed to allow students to develop an advanced competency in written and spoken Indonesian, and achieve 'basic vocational proficiency' in Indonesian or Level 3 of the International Second Language Proficiency Ratings, meaning they can perform effectively in most formal and informal situations.

Materials used include short stories, magazine articles and popular videos. Students' translation skills are also enhanced. Graduates attain a relatively high level of fluency, enabling them to communicate effectively in Indonesian in social and employment contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on developing an awareness of social and cultural contexts of Indonesia using the Indonesian language. This includes broad social–cultural topics, as well as some specific focus on political contexts which are of importance to Indonesia today. To this end a wide variety of materials and language styles (genres) are explored and students are expected to explore, understand and articulate those contexts.
