Unit Overview

Description

This unit comprises 25 per cent of the second year of the Master of Infectious Diseases (52530). It involves original research by the student under supervision, and is undertaken in a research laboratory in the discipline of Microbiology and Immunology, within PathWest or at other institutions in Australia or overseas. The student gains experience in both oral and written scientific communication. Research topics are relevant to topics including medical microbiology, tropical infectious diseases or public and environmental health microbiology. Students must have a WAM of at least 70% across the first year of the course or completion of the Graduate Diploma in Infectious Diseases (51330) with a WAM of at least 70%. Approval from the course coordinator is also required which is dependent on a suitable project and appropriate supervision being available.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) define, develop and carry out an original scientific research project; (2) critically appraise scientific literature; (3) demonstrate effective skills in critical evaluation of data; (4) demonstrate effective scientific writing and oral presentation skills; and (5) extend knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) progress report; (2) dissertation; (3) final research seminar; and (4) literature review. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
