Content
This unit involves undertaking a program of experimental study in a research-active laboratory under the supervision of an experienced member of the discipline. The experimental data obtained is then presented in the form of a written thesis, which after submission, is subjected to an oral defence. The thesis details the background to the research, the methods employed, the results obtained, an analysis of the results in the context of the field and a bibliography. The main academic objectives are for students to develop an understanding of the scientific research process and their abilities to conduct independent research; acquire training and practice in skills such as experimental methods, problem-solving, literature searching, data analysis and interpretation, computing, team building, and written and oral communication.
Outcomes
Students are able to (1) write and compile a scientific thesis in a format appropriate for the discipline; (2) show understanding of scientific methods relevant to their research project and explain the relationship of their findings to other work in the field; (3) obtain, analyse and present original research data; (4) interpret and critically appraise their own and other research data, and use statistical tools to assess reliability of their findings as required; and (5) respond to questions on their thesis in a manner that shows mastery of the content and some knowledge of related areas.
