Content This unit covers a diversity of advanced topics in conservation genetics, including population structuring of threatened taxa; provenance in restoration ecology; extinction processes; DNA barcoding uses and consequences, among others. The unit provides a background appropriate for future research in conservation biology, molecular ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, and marine, plant or animal biology. It is also directly relevant to industry such as natural resource management, environment and conservation researchers and restoration ecology.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) have a familiarity with the important literature and theories in conservation genetics; (2) develop critical thinking skills in interpretation of data and conclusions drawn in the international literature; (3) demonstrate a knowledge of the genetic tools and how to use them; (4) demonstrate a knowledge of genetic analytical methods and how to use them; and (5) develop a base of knowledge directly applicable to the student's current research or future research objectives.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) a written research project proposal; (2) an oral presentation of the research project proposal; (3) participation in seminar and lecture discussions; (4) an assignment based on tutorials and laboratory work; and (5) laboratory note book. Prerequisites: enrolment in the Master of Biological Science (72520) or the Master of Biotechnology (71580) or the Master of Geographic Information Science (71570) or Bachelor of Science (Honours) (BH004)
Advisable prior study: GENE2250 Principles of Inheritance or ANIM3362 Evolutionary Processes or equivalent
