Content This unit is taken over two successive semesters and parts 1 and 2 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Students can commence the unit in either semester 1 or semester 2. The unit involves undertaking a program of experimental study in a research-active laboratory under the supervision of an experienced member of the discipline. The experimental data obtained is then presented in the form of a written thesis which, after submission, is subjected to an oral defence. The thesis details the background to the research, the methods employed, the results obtained, an analysis of the results in the context of the field and a bibliography.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) write and compile a scientific thesis in a format appropriate for the discipline; (2) show understanding of scientific methods relevant to their research project; (3) use statistical tools to assess reliability of their findings; (4) obtain, analyse and present original research data; (5) interpret and critically appraise their own and other research data; (6) explain the relationship of their findings to other work in the field; and (7) respond to questions on their thesis in a manner that shows mastery of the content and some knowledge of related areas.
Assessment This comprises an assessment of the thesis (67 per cent), a seminar on the research related to the thesis (13 per cent), an oral defence of the thesis (13 per cent) and a supervisor assessment of the student (7 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of publication but may be subject to change.
  • All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are encouraged to register for free online support through GETSmart; to help themselves to the extensive range of resources on UWA's STUDYSmarter website; and to participate in WRITESmart and (ma+hs)Smart drop-ins and workshops.
  • Books and other material wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary reading', 'Recommended reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult. Where texts are listed in the unit description above, an asterisk (*) indicates that the book is available in paperback.
