Content The main objective of this unit is to enable UWA students to fulfil UWA's service learning requirement by participating in a structured service learning placement within an educational institution in Asia. In line with UWA's policy on service learning, this placement will provide students with an opportunity to engage in a real world service experience where they have the potential to make a positive difference to the lives of others through a challenging international volunteering experience in a culture and community different from their own. Specifically, students are placed in a school or a college as an assistant in the teaching of English for a period of 6 to 8 weeks.

Students who choose to participate in this unit are provided with the appropriate support, training and induction prior to their placement. They also receive appropriate ongoing support and guidance during and after their placement.

Students participating in this unit develop and are assessed on their personal learning and development plan which entails creating, implementing and evaluating personal goals. These goals could relate to their ability to develop cross-cultural understanding, relationship building, citizenship, leadership and/or confidence. Students are asked to reflect on the issues, benefits and challenges related to their educational placement through a written assignment. Furthermore, students are assessed on their capacity to make a contribution to the school or college.

Those students participating in this unit need to obtain the necessary travel visas, police clearances (as applicable) as well as their own travel insurance for health and personal liability. Accordingly, students should be aware that additional costs for the above matters and the cost of travel are associated with this unit.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) identify, reflect and evaluate issues, benefits and challenges related to their educational placement; (2) create, implement and evaluate a personal development plan; and (3) make a contribution to the school or college.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) written assessment; (2) personal learning development plan
written assessment; and (3) community organisation assessment

Unit rules
Prerequisites: completion of at least 48 credit points
Advisable prior study: SVLG1001 Fundamentals of Service Learning, SVLG1002 Service Learning Experience
Approved quota: 20—first come first served; interview may be required
Contact hours 6 hours per week for 2 weeks from week one; 130 hours during the overseas placement; 3 hours per week for 2 weeks after students return from their overseas placement
Note This unit is recognised by the University as a service learning unit. Service learning refers specifically to community engagement activities that are embedded in units of study, being structured and assessed as formal educational experiences.
