EDUC5516 Literacy Across the Curriculum

Content Students examine and critique research based approaches to teaching literacy in the Primary classroom, including vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, writing, visual literacy and spelling in the context of a range of text types across the curriculum, including multimodal text. Students also learn how to plan and sequence teaching and learning strategies for literacy in primary settings and investigate strategies to support whole class, small group and individualised literacy instruction.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of how primary aged children learn language and literacy; (2) demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the English curriculum and a range of pedagogies to teach it; (3) articulate a theory of literacy learning and teaching for the primary years, based on a critical analysis of research literature; (4) demonstrate an ability to plan units of work in English that are appropriate for diverse learning needs; (5) demonstrate knowledge of how to develop children's literacy skills to support numeracy across the curriculum; (6) develop skills to evaluate, use and create resources for teaching and learning including information and communication technologies (ICTs) and other educational technologies; (7) demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies, including informal, formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches when developing an integrated unit of work focused on English; and (8) communicate effectively and professionally with peers, university staff and other professionals.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) an assignment; (2) a unit of work with a rationale; and (3) test. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite standard(s) for the an assignment, a unit of work with a rationale, and test components of the unit, as specified in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
