Content This unit focuses on the development of knowledge and skills essential for establishing and maintaining effective relationships for learning and teaching. This includes understanding the significance and complexity of relationships and communication practices with students, parents and colleagues, managing classroom behaviour and learning management, establishing respectful and safe learning environments and understanding motivation and engagement. Through the course of the unit students enhance their communication and observational research skills.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of the social and emotional development of adolescents; (2) demonstrate an understanding of theoretical perspectives associated with motivation, engagement and classroom management; (3) demonstrate an understanding of the processes of conflict and mediation; (4) demonstrate a knowledge of basic classroom management strategies to create an effective and safe learning environment; (5) demonstrate an awareness of the legal issues that relate to the care and education of children; (6) develop effective communication that facilitates interactions and relationships with and between students, parents and colleagues; and (7) use observational data and personal and professional reflection to develop interpersonal skills and relationships.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) professional practice reflection; (2) critical review and workshop participation; and (3) law assignment. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite standard(s) for the professional practice reflection, critical review and workshop participation, and law assignment components of the unit, as specified in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
