Content This unit provides an evidence based understanding of the dynamics that have influenced the development and current practice of Australian employment relations, as well as an understanding of the institutional arrangements affecting practice in the field, and future challenges facing the field.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) understand the major philosophical, regulatory and institutional changes that have occurred in Australian employment relations; (2) describe key social and economic factors that have contributed to these changes; (3) explain the role of the key actors and their relationships in the Australian employment relations system; (4) identify the effect of changes in Australian industrial relations, especially since 1996, on the role of the key actors and various institutional arrangements affecting the practice of Australian employment relations; (5) understand the significance and effect of emerging issues in Australian employment relations; (6) demonstrate writing skills through the preparation of a case based report and oral communication skills by leading a discussion and through participation in tutorials; and (7) develop information literacy and interpersonal skills by gathering evidence from a range of academic sources and through participation in a team project.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 overall and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

Prerequisites: EMPL1101 Introduction to Employment Relations; EMPL1206 Social Psychology of Work; MGMT1135 Organisational Behaviour; or MGMT1136 Management and Organisations; for pre-2012 courses: a Level 1 Management or Employment Relations unit
