Content This unit covers particle and rigid body kinematics and kinetics presented through case studies of various mechanical components, mechanisms and machines. Both planar and three-dimensional dynamics are considered, including gyroscopic behaviour. Momentum and energy methods are applied to illustrate different approaches to solving problems.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) apply momentum and energy methods; (2) analyse and evaluate the mobility and kinematics of planar and spatial mechanisms; (3) analyse and evaluate the dynamic behaviour of rotating machinery; (4) explain the conditions under which gyroscopic motion occurs and analyse systems that exhibit this behaviour; (5) describe and apply various control methods for robotic mechanisms; (6) design mechanisms that meet specific performance criteria; (7) work effectively in a team and take responsibility for team outcomes; and (8) communicate findings effectively and concisely in written, oral and visual forms.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) assignments; (2) laboratories; and (3) test(s) and a final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite standard(s) for the test(s) and a final examination component of the unit, as specified in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 overall and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

Prerequisites: CITS2401 Computer Analysis and Visualisation and ENSC2001 Motion and (MATH1002 Mathematical Methods 2 or MATH1011 Multivariable Calculus) and PHYS1001 Physics for Scientists and Engineers
