IMED5803 Introduction to Research in Health Professions Education

Content This unit provides an overview of qualitative and quantitative, experimental and mixed methods of research appropriate in educational research. This ensures the basic principles relating to research design and analysis in health professional education are covered, allowing students to formulate focused, meaningful and feasible research questions and testable hypotheses. In addition, students have the opportunity to read, discuss and critique relevant educational research in terms of theory and research design.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) identify various types of research designs applied in health professional education; (2) describe the associated strengths and weaknesses of different research designs; (3) provide an overview of qualitative research methods; (4) provide an overview of quantitative research methods; (5) explain and apply basic qualitative data analysis techniques and quantitative statistical methods; and (6) critique relevant health profession-related educational literature.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) a critique of an educational research project; (2) preparation of a research proposal; and (3) preparation of a human ethics research application. There are no formal examinations for this unit. Further information is available in the unit outline.
