Content This unit explores the dynamics of language use in a migratory context, with a partucular focus on the Australian context. The unit analyses the repertoire of the Italian community in Australia, covering post-war migrants and their descendants, and documents the processes of attrition which Italian is undergoing. It also examines aspects related to the acquisition of Italian by migrants in Italy and the link between language, identity and culture.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) analyse the major characteristics of the plurilingualism of the Italian community in Australia, and of migrant communities in Italy; (2) apply theoretical models to the study of language contact in a migratory context; (3) analyse the acquisition of Italian as a second language by migrants in Italy; (4) situate major migratory events in Italy and Australia, within their historical contexts; and (5) express themselves with accuracy and fluency in spoken and written Italian to the Level B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) test; (2) tutorial presentation; and (3) research essay. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 overall and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
