||This unit follows on from MATH1001 Mathematical Methods 1 and MATH1002 Mathematical Methods 2. It provides a foundation in some of the more advanced concepts and techniques of mathematics which are required in a number of disciplines, particularly Physics.|
||Students are able to (1) understand and employ the fundamental theorems of multivariable calculus; (2) understand and employ integral transforms, particularly Fourier transforms; (3) understand Green's functions; (4) use the method of separation of variables to solve partial differential equations; (5) understand complex vector spaces, inner product spaces and normed spaces; (6) understand infinite dimensional vector spaces, particularly Hilbert spaces; (7) understand linear operators, in particular Hermitian operators; (8) understand and identify eigenfunctions of Sturm–Liouville problems; and (9) understand spherical harmonics.|
||Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) an end-of-semester examination; and (2) three in-semester written tests. Further information is available in the unit outline.|
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 overall and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
