Content This is a project-based unit that enables students to work on a project of their choice under supervision. The skills learned are essential for a future engineering career and include problem identification, synthesis of solutions, information search and analysis, logic and creative thinking, development of abstract concepts and testing ideas, project management, oral and written communication, time management and teamwork. Most engineers spend years working on projects and taking responsibility for larger ones as their management skills improve. To complete the project, students not only have to master the technical skills required, but also need to learn how best to interact with resource suppliers such as workshop technicians, fellow students, external personnel and their supervisors and other school staff.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) explore aspects of engineering which interest them to a greater extent than would be possible in a formal coursework unit; (2) develop skills required for independent, self-directed investigations, design and research; (3) improve their competence in communication skills, specifically in understanding a project brief, working with a project supervisor, participating in review meetings, and oral presentation and report writing tasks; and (4) develop important teamwork skills.
Assessment This may comprise student conduct, verbal presentation, a project proposal and a written report.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in the unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete the course.
