Content This unit covers mining methods and equipment; the mining cycle; mining method selection; ground control; drilling and blasting; mining in high stress and seismically active conditions; shafts and declines; materials handling; and ventilation (primary and secondary ventilation circuits). The unit includes a field trip to some underground mines. This trip is likely to last a few days, during the semester study break. Accommodation and food costs are borne by the students, and students must sign a student code of conduct before attending, and observe health and safety instructions.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) demonstrate critical thinking and information literacy (locate and evaluate sources of information); (2) communicate effectively in writing according to the conventions of the discipline; (3) practise enquiry-based thinking relevant to the discipline; (4) demonstrate technical competence and skills relevant to the design and operation of underground mines; (5) describe the key considerations associated with the development of an underground mine; and (6) identify the major problems associated with underground mining and use systematic methods to resolve these issues.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) assignment; (2) mine visit report; and (3) final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is only available in this unit in the case of a student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
Unit Coordinator(s) Associate Professor Hakan Basarir

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of publication but may be subject to change.
  • All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are encouraged to register for free online support through GETSmart; to help themselves to the extensive range of resources on UWA's STUDYSmarter website; and to participate in WRITESmart and (ma+hs)Smart drop-ins and workshops.
  • Books and other material wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary reading', 'Recommended reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult. Where texts are listed in the unit description above, an asterisk (*) indicates that the book is available in paperback.
