Content Technology and innovation are pervasive forces throughout society and organisations. They are both critical to establishing a sustainable competitive edge through either differentiation or a superior cost position. This unit provides students with a strategic perspective on the role of technology and innovation in organisations and also with practical management tools that they can use to manage specific innovations and technological changes. The first segment of the unit establishes a basic understanding of the nature of technology and innovation. The second segment deals with the management of innovative projects—the vehicle of change. The third segment of the unit deals with strategic aspects of technology and innovation, establishing a stream of innovations to maintain a competitive edge.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) explain the concepts and key theories relating to commercialisation and new product development; (2) explain the theory of innovation and its diffusion process within an applied environment; (3) evaluate and screen commercialisation options and opportunities; (4) undertake a comprehensive assessment and prepare a commercialisation plan for the commercialisation of a new product or innovation; (5) undertake an assessment of intellectual property (IP) rights protection measures that relate to the commercialisation of a new product or innovation and build an IP portfolio; and (6) demonstrate the skills of making a formal presentation of the business case and potential funding request for the new product or innovation's commercialisation to third parties.

Unit rules
Prerequisites: enrolment in the Master of Business Administration (coursework) or the Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation; or approval from the Faculty of Business only, which will be determined with regard to relevant documented professional work experience.
