Content This unit focuses on the application of psychological principles to training and development. It provides an introduction to training and development as a means of gaining a better appreciation of the interrelationship between organisational strategy, human resources policies and practices, and the development of employees through targeted interventions. As well as covering more functional areas of training and development, such as the design and development of effective training programs, contemporary training methods and current adult learning theory and practice, students also gain an appreciation of the strategic nature of training, particularly in relation to the analysis of individual and organisational training needs, and training evaluation. The unit also explores contemporary development topics, including coaching and mentoring, interpersonal skills training and cultural issues in training.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) demonstrate understanding and knowledge regarding the training process within organisational settings; (2) demonstrate understanding and knowledge regarding factors that can influence the potential success of training programs; (3) design and deliver an effective training program; and (4) justify the decisions behind their group's training program by writing an essay that draws on theoretical and empirical research.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) assignment 1; (2) presentation; and (3) assignment 2. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Prerequisites: enrolment in the Master of Industrial and Organisational Psychology (coursework and dissertation) (53580) or the combined Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Industrial and Organisational Psychology (01880/54580) or the Master of Business Psychology (73550)
