PSYC5674 Assessment and Intervention—Childhood Disorders

Content Children do not self-refer for assessment. This raises a range of ethical and practical issues. Typically they are referred for assessment by parents, carers, teachers or other professionals working with them. The issues for which they are referred are of concern to the referring party. They are usually, but not necessarily, of concern for the child. Issues that cause most concern vary with the age of the child but typically include problems with development, learning and behaviour. The unit introduces students to the presentation of children with a variety of disorders that typically arise during the developmental years; assessment tools and techniques; diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis; communication and consultation with stakeholders; and common evidence-based interventions.
Outcomes Students are able to (1) gain an understanding of the rationale for, and ethics of, assessing children and development of interventions; (2) develop an understanding of, and experience with, the process of assessment; (3) gain familiarity with diagnostic criteria provided by the DSM-5 and the ICD-10; (4) gain experience with the major assessment strategies and techniques that are used to gather information about young clients, and interpretation of these assessments; (5) gain experience in communicating assessment outcomes and recommendations both orally and in written form to varied audiences, e.g. parents, schools; (6) develop awareness and experience of the major evidence-based interventions used with clients with disorders originating in infancy, childhood and adolescence; and (7) be equipped with the ability to identify, formulate and treat childhood behaviour disorders.
Assessment Typically this unit is assessed in the following ways: (1) mid-semester examination and (2) final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Prerequisites: enrolment in the combined Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Clinical Psychology (01870/54570) or the Master of Psychology (Clinical) (52560) or the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology 53370; and PSYC5672 Foundations in Clinical Skills I and PSYC5673 Foundations in Clinical Skills II

Note Students enrolled in an APAC accredited program must hold provisional registration as a psychologist. It is the students' responsibility to ensure registration eligibility.
