Honours Overview

Description

An Honours in Medical Research will allow you to gain an appreciation of the philosophy, objectives, difficulties and practicalities of biomedical research. The program will equip you with the ability to formulate and write a literature review and research proposal and present and explain this orally and in writing. You will be capable of critically evaluating and presenting scientific literature within your field of study and critiquing aspects of study design and the use and interpretation of specific research methodology. This honours program will develop your ability to collect, critically analyse, and interpret data, and encourage you to be creative in approaching problem solving in a scientific manner. Training in Medical Research is most advantageous for careers in medicine, medical and academic research, dentistry, pharmacy, podiatry, pharmaceutical industry, and medical equipment manufacturing, marketing and support. It will also provide you with a solid background for any field in which clear communication and a critical approach to evaluating data are integral.

Please read the Honours in Medical Research Course Handbook in conjunction with other information on this page. This handbook includes an outline of the different components of the course and how they will be assessed, specific instructions on how to apply to enrol in Honours, advice for supervisors and examiners, and a list of Research Projects available.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) critically evaluate literature relevant to the area of research and compile references in an appropriate style; (2) demonstrate advanced oral and written communication skills; (3) develop a research plan to address the aims of the project; (4) execute a range of statistical analyses relevant to biomedical research; (5) discuss considerations relevant to laboratory safety; (6) demonstrate an advanced understanding of the responsible conduct of research in the biomedical sciences; (7) demonstrate an advanced understanding of good clinical practice; (8) evaluate and design a research project based on a biomedical question; (9) perform experiments, interpret data, solve scientific problems, identify limitations and future directions; and (10) apply chemistry fundamentals in a laboratory setting.

Entry requirements

Attainment of a weighted average mark of at least 65 per cent in the Level 3 units of a Biomedical Science Major or a relevant cognate discipline, appropriate for the student's project. Students must confirm with a supervisor their willingness and availability to supervise their Honours project prior to enrolment.
