Honours Overview

Description

As an Honours in Economics student, you will study advanced economic theory, review high-level research literature concerning economics and its various applications, and prepare a dissertation that is the result of substantial academic research. Successful completion of the honours specialisation demonstrates that you are competent are competent to interpret and conduct research in at least one field of economics and able to apply advanced economic research methods within that same field.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate coherent and advanced knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts in economics; (2) undertake quantitative economic research and critically evaluate theoretical and/or applied economic issues at an advanced level; and (3) communicate effectively and succinctly the advanced analyses of the economy and economic outcomes.

Entry requirements

The equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 80 per cent in the students' top 3 level 3 economics units of the Business Economics major.

Please note that from 2026 students will only be able to pursue an Honours in Economics through the B.Ec degree. Students contemplating an Honours in Economics are, therefore, advised to switch to the B.Ec before the start of Semester 1 2025. They should also ensure that they complete the following Level 3 units: ECON3302 Applied Microeconomics; ECON3303 Applied Macroeconomics; and ECON3371 Applied Econometric Methods and Data Analysis (noting the pre-requisites for these units). Offer of a place on the Honours Economic program in the B.Com (and B.Ec) is also conditional on appropriate supervision being available.
