Unit Overview

Description

This unit builds upon the tools and techniques introduced in CHEM2104-Energy and Materials. Topics include nanotechnology, polymers, drug delivery, nanostructured liquids and solid materials, liquid crystals, surfactants, interfaces and emulsions. Advanced concepts in these topics are also taught using examples from cutting edge chemical research and a range of industries.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) describe the principles and concepts related to topics in advanced materials; (2) acquire practical skills in the operation of relevant instrumentation; (3) demonstrate skills in scientific writing, problem solving, critical analysis and teamwork; (4) acquire practical skills in data analysis; and (5) acquire practical skills in the interpretation of experimental measurements and the evaluation of their reliability and sensitivity.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) laboratory reports and worksheets; (2) quizzes; and (3) a final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the laboratory reports and worksheets component.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
