Unit Overview

Description

This unit offers students an intensive three-week study in video production and television studio work, using state-of-the-art facilities at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore. It builds on a foundational understanding of contemporary media production.

Hands-on workshops are conducted in an environment equipped with the apparatus utilised in professional video and television production contexts. Students' learning is facilitated by lectures, interactive workshops and supervised teamwork projects, underpinned by reference to text-based study materials including a workbook. In addition, the unit fosters cross-cultural communication and generic skills such as teamwork, problem solving and time management.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate competence in the use of professional writing conventions within the video production industry; (2) demonstrate an understanding of basic principles governing camera work, lighting, sound production and editing equipment and software; (3) demonstrate competence in the use of television studio equipment; (4) demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team in a cross cultural setting to respond to practical problems or challenges; (5) demonstrate the ability to manage time and resources in order to complete project work successfully; and (6) apply analytical and research skills in the execution of practical project work.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) practical work and (2) final report. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Approved quota: 20—preference will be given to students in the following order. At all points if there are more students than places then the quota is filled based upon demonstrated academic merit, at the discretion of the unit coordinator and/or major coordinator of Communication and Media Studies.

1st priority: Students enrolled in the Communication and Media Studies major who have completed COMM2002 and/or COMM2001.
2nd priority: Students enrolled in the Masters of Strategic Communication (COMM5901)

After places are filled from these two pools, if there is availability within the quota positions can be awarded to UWA students who can show:

1. demonstrated interest and experience in media and video production;
2. evidence of successful participation in collaborative project work;
3. significant academic merit.
Incidental fees
Incidental student fees and charges are costs incurred by students as part of their studies at UWA that are in addition to their tuition fees (further information is available here).
Participation in this unit will incur the following incidental fee(s):

workshops/in-studio learning: 9am to 1pm, Monday to Friday for 3 weeks (4 hours daily for 15 days)

Expression of Interest process is conducted in the semester prior to enrollment.

Students cover the cost of their accommodation, meals and travel costs. The university provides bursaries to offset these costs (available from UWA's Study Abroad office) as long as application for funds are made to the Study Abroad office before the closing date in October.

As places are limited, it is important that those who enrol in this unit do not withdraw unless there are serious intervening circumstances.

  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
