Unit Overview

Description

This unit forms part of a prescribed course sequence for the non-award, conversion HDR Prelim (FABLE) course.

Students are required to produce a research output on a course relevant topic of their choice, provided the topic is approved by their supervisor and the HDR Prelim (FABLE) course coordinator.

In accordance with the University Policy: Courses: Coursework Dissertation

https://www.governance.uwa.edu.au/procedures/policies/policies-and-procedures?method=document&id=UP15%2F6 the research output, agreed to by the supervisor is typically:

a) a 12,000 - 18,000 word text object (with embedded figures and tables); or

b) a research manuscript of at least 6,000 words in a format suitable for publication in a reputable journal of the discipline; or

c) a creative object constructed within a research framework (a musical composition, a piece of creative writing, an architectural design, or a work of art), accompanied by an exegesis of at least 2,000 - 4,000 words,

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) develop advanced research skills required to complete an academic dissertation at a postgraduate level; (2) further develop and apply an academic outline/method to communicate research results at a postgraduate level; and (3) develop advanced writing skills required to complete an academic dissertation at a postgraduate level.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: continuing assessment: submission of research output. A final mark is awarded at the completion of dissertation parts 1 to 4. Further information is available in the unit outline.

  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
