Unit Overview

Description

The goal of this unit is to provide students with authentic experiences that links learning to workplace programs, expectations and practices. Student undertake 100 hours on a placement in a health-related organisation outside of the university. Students have the opportunity to build their confidence, communication and organisational capabilities through this work-integrated learning experience.

Students acquire an insight and understanding, through their placement experience, of the skills and attributes required to successfully participate in the workforce. The unit endeavours to match with students' future interests to develop their skills and acquire additional knowledge to increase their employability and work-readiness.

The student's placement experience is supported with interactive workshops, on-line supporting content/resources, alongside working with agencies to develop these skills for work/professional practice.

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to: Participate in the activities in the work based professional placement environment to demonstrate a positive contribution to the placement organisation; Demonstrate application of core skills for successful participation in work/professional practice across placement activities; Demonstrate, evaluate and reflect on the key professional attributes and behaviour sought by employers in a working environment; Demonstrate the application of effective professional communication skills (public speaking, presentations, written, non-verbal) using appropriate information, conventions, digital systems and tools; Demonstrate developing skills in recognising and responding to differing and diverse perspectives in work-related activities and to manage conflict; Demonstrate developing skills in recognising and responding to differing and diverse perspectives in work-related activities and to manage conflict; Evaluate, reflect and report on the outcomes and experiences of the professional placement; Apply the various strategies to build employability while on placement and reflect on the transference of those skills to their future profession.

Outcomes

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) work placement; (2) written assignment; and (3) seminar presentation. Further information is available in the unit outline.



This unit is assessed on an ungraded pass/ungraded failed basis. All assessment items must be successfully completed.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
