Unit Overview

Description

This unit focuses on the knowledge, skills and clinical evidence around the assessment and prescription of exercise for clients with chronic and/or complex conditions. The pathologies or conditions covered are considered key domains for a clinical exercise physiologist across prevention, management and exercise rehabilitation. Across all topics the focus is on understanding the impact of the condition, the evidence around the role of exercise, and an ability to use that knowledge and evidence to inform and deliver exercise within clinical practice.

This unit will be assessed using a combination of blended learning assessment and feedback, incorporating theoretical and practical elements, problem based learning, case study analysis and simulated learning modes.

There is a high practical component within this unit including assessment and delivery of an exercise management plan and participation in exercise assessment and prescription with peers.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) critically evaluate the evidence base and apply relevant knowledge to AEP practice in an effective and methodical manner to optimise health status, function, recovery, independence, and participation for individuals and population groups with chronic and/or complex presentations; (2) demonstrate an ability to safely screen, assess, and evaluate function, capacity, and health status for individuals and populations; (3) formulate appropriate screening, monitoring and assessments considering key factors including health and treatment needs and presentation, client preferences and goals, and socio-cultural factors; (4) utilise assessment outcomes to inform exercise prescription in a variety of populations, across different settings; and (5) prescribe, deliver, adapt and evaluate evidence based exercise interventions that optimise health, function, recovery, independence, and participation in chronic and/or complex conditions.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) applied clinical knowledge assessments and (2) practical exam - objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the practical exam - objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) component.

  • The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of publication but may be subject to change.
  • All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are encouraged to register for free online support through GETSmart; to help themselves to the extensive range of resources on UWA's STUDYSmarter website; and to participate in WRITESmart and (ma+hs)Smart drop-ins and workshops.
  • Unit readings, including any essential textbooks, are listed in the unit outline for each unit, one week prior the commencement of study. The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change.
