Minor Overview
- About this minor
This Minor combines language study and cultural knowledge of Japanese society and is designed to boost the employment prospects of the graduates. It equips students with skills to communicate and negotiate with people of different cultural backgrounds. Graduates will be able to speak and behave appropriately in different situations and demonstrate an understanding of Japanese culture and society. By adding this minor, students gain an advantage after graduation as they enter the global employment market. The minor in Japanese is available at two levels: 1) for students with no or little prior knowledge of the language. 2) for students with ATAR Japanese or equivalent.
- Outcomes
- Students are able to (1) demonstrate Japanese language proficiency, in both oral and written forms, equivalent to N5 to N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test ; (2) demonstrate cultural competence and an understanding of the current socio-cultural issues in Japan; (3) acquire information literacy and management skills in Japanese through a variety of media and search techniques ; and (4) demonstrate different communication skills according to the level of formality in the Japanese cultural settings.

All students are required to complete at least three Japanese language units in sequence and then choose between doing a fourth Japanese language unit or taking ASIA3002 Issues in Japanese Society and Culture. Students with no or little prior knowledge of Japanese take units from Groups A and B. Students with ATAR Japanese or equivalent take all units from Groups C and D.
