ARCT4440 Project Implementation and Documentation

This unit describes the respective stages through which a medium scale architectural project progresses. Beginning with pre-design, the unit introduces topics including Indigenous land laws, the architect–client agreement, site analysis and consultation with authorities, before moving into the requirements for schematic design, design development and contract documentation. Students gain an understanding of the complexities of practice, construction and the integration of building technology and the importance of appropriate detailing. The lecture series includes environmental performance through design and regulation. Presentations by consultants introduces students to efficient and effective thermal, lighting and acoustic design concepts, along with material and resource optimisation. The application of the unit content is through a set of documentation drawings and a report prepared by each student based on a new, small-scale design proposal which is undertaken during the first three weeks of the semester.
Students are able to (1) understand the principles and application of environmental control systems; (2) undertake calculations and use software to determine environmental impacts of heat, light, sound, savings in water collection, benefits from vegetation and savings in energy use; and (3) document a modest design proposal that incorporates technical and environmental areas of study.
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) report on project and (2) final set of drawn documents. Further information is available in the unit outline.
