This unit provides an opportunity for students to engage with a specific issue/problem in the context of an established theoretical framework. Rather than simply introducing students to a particular philosopher or theorist through secondary texts, the unit brings them face-to-face with primary texts with the aim of developing skills in applying Western critical theories to Asian contexts. Through an enquiry-based learning approach, students address specific research topics in the context of contemporary Asia. The unit encourages students to develop research skills and reflect on the use of critical theory in the context of their own professional practice.
Students are able to (1) demonstrate an advanced understanding and a critical ability to apply established critical theories to the context of contemporary Asia; (2) conduct scholarly research and communicate findings on a current issue in Asia; and (3) communicate advanced arguments in written and oral assessments that engage with critical theory.
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) group project; (2) presentation and critical response paper; and (3) research essay. Further information is available in the unit outline.
