- Biomedical engineering principles are often put into practice through one of the following mechanisms: academic research, creation of a start-up company to commercialise a medical device or existing medical devices in hospitals and clinics. This unit allows students to apply core principles of biomedical engineering introduced throughout the undergraduate and masters programs to these areas. Specifically, the following content is covered in this unit: (a) students learn about cutting-edge biomedical engineering research ongoing in the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and have the opportunity to implement design approaches in specific projects; (b) students learn about commercialisation pathways for medical devices and upon completion of the unit understand each aspect in medical device development; and (c) students learn in detail how medical devices are currently used in hospital settings and about the processes in place for procurement, maintenance and safety.
- Students are able to (1) apply knowledge gained in biomedical engineering to specific problems in biomedical engineering research projects in areas such as biophotonics, biomedical sensors, computational biomechanics and biomaterials; (2) design a strategy for implementation of a new research project in the field of biomedical engineering in a specific medical application; (3) analyse the commercialisation pathway for a medical device, including regulatory approval, reimbursement mechanisms and marketing strategies for a medical device; (4) design a business plan for a mock start-up company; and (5) analyse a range of medical devices currently used in hospital settings and the decision-making process involved in procuring medical devices in hospitals.
- Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) laboratories; (2) a project; and (3) examinations. Further information is available in the unit outline.
Supplementary assessment is only available in this unit in the case of a student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
