All students are required to participate in a full-day 'Leadership Challenge' as part of their full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA). The objective of participation in this day is for students to demonstrate leadership competencies developed throughout their MBA, but especially within the Leadership Development Program (a suite of activities focused on developing students' self awareness and practical leadership skills). The challenge takes place towards the end of the MBA and involves two elements:

(1) Leadership in Action—the first element is team-based participation in a leadership challenge performed in front of judges. The judges include at least one UWA Business School professor, at least two senior leaders from industry, and at least one alumni from the UWA MBA course. The Leadership in Action challenge is designed to be experiential (for example, if appropriate, actors are hired to play key roles). Prizes and certificates are awarded to the best performing team. An example challenge involves students being asked to take on the role of executives from a major company, and then to work as a small team to persuade executives from different countries within the company (actors) to adopt a company wide sustainability program such as reducing global plastic bag usage by 33 per cent. This scenario requires students to exercise leadership in a situation in which they have no direct influence over their colleagues, in which colleagues taking up the challenge could be against their own interest, and in which cultural issues related to different laws, regulations and customer experiences need to be taken into account.

(2) Leadership Journey—the second element of the day is for students to present, in a presentation no longer than four minutes, their leadership development journey throughout the MBA as well as their plans for the future. This activity requires students to reflect on and make sense of their development as a leader throughout their MBA, drawing on their experiences and insights across all core units, electives, and other leadership development activities. It also requires students to articulate a clear personal vision for their future as a leader. Students are encouraged to consider creative and high impact ways to present their leadership journey and plans.
Students are able to (1) work dynamically as a team to solve a complex leadership challenge; (2) demonstrate high level interpersonal skills, such as influencing others, being persuasive, and dealing effectively with conflict; (3) reflect on their personal leadership journey and synthesise their learning; (4) present their leadership journey in a clear and compelling way; and (5) articulate a clear vision for future plans to develop as a leader.
