Unit Overview

Description

This unit will be delivered in conjunction with the DENT3002 Body Systems 2 unit. These units will provide students with the basic essential knowledge of the medical sciences that is required for dental practice. This unit covers anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, pathology, and development as they relate to dentistry. Learning will be approached through the different organ systems with a focus on the immune, cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological systems.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) describe clinically relevant normal and abnormal human anatomy, structure, function, behaviour and development for the immune, cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological systems including pain pathways and motor control; (2) describe the clinical and pathological manifestations, natural history, therapeutic principles and aspects of population health for common conditions of the immune, cardiovascular (including blood pathologies), respiratory and neurological systems, and conditions associated with pathogens; and (3) display professional behaviour in an educational setting.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) assignments; (2) tests; (3) examinations; and (4) professional behaviour. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the examinations and professional behaviour components.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
