Unit Overview
- Description
This unit is a continuation of the DENT4215 Introduction to Clinical Dentistry 1 unit from 1st Semester It will be taught in conjunction with the DENT4218 Introduction to Clinical Dentistry 2 Part 1 unit. Students will perform comprehensive oral clinical examinations, diagnose the presenting problems and formulate treatment plans for their patients. They will provide clinical treatments pursuant to the patient's needs and the individual student's ability. As the Semester progresses, more procedures may be undertaken under the supervision of experienced academic and clinical staff. Students will also begin their group research project that will be undertaken throughout the remainder of the DMD course. Personal and professional development will continue throughout the Semester.

Students are able to (1) examine patients in the clinical setting to diagnose periodontal conditions; (2) apply the principles and biological rationale of periodontal treatment to the clinical management of patients with periodontal conditions; (3) demonstrate competence in the clinical skills needed to treat patients with periodontal conditions through the clinical management of such patients; (4) examine patients in the clinical setting to diagnose pulp, root canal and peri-radicular conditions; (5) compose and implement periodontal, endodontic and simple restorative dental treatment plans, and plan the other dental treatment needs for patients; (6) develop competence in clinical dental practice through the provision of dental care to patients; (7) demonstrate personal and professional development; (8) design, develop and participate in a group research project that will be undertaken throughout the remainder of the DMD course; and (9) prepare the relevant documentation required for the research project.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) written assessments; (2) practical assessments; and (3) professional behaviour assessment (Pass/Fail). Further information is available in the unit outline.
To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the written assessments, practical assessments, and professional behaviour assessment (Pass/Fail) components.
Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit is asynchronous delivery, with NO requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online timetabled
100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit includes some synchronous components, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online Restricted
Not available for self-enrolment. Students access this mode by contacting their student office through AskUWA. 100% Online Unit.
NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
External
No attendance or regular contact is required, and all study requirements are completed either via correspondence and/or online submission.
Off-campus
Regular attendance is not required, but student attends the institution face to face on an agreed schedule for purposes of supervision and/or instruction.
Multi-mode
