Unit Overview
- Description
In this unit, pre-service teachers will be introduced to child development and learning theory. Pre-service teachers will build their knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of children, and their physical, social and intellectual development. They will explore research into how students in the early to middle childhood phases of development learn, children's expected development trajectories, factors and circumstances that might impact a child's specific learning needs, potential challenges to learning, and the implications of these for teaching. Pre-service teachers will engage with the principles of effective teaching, key instructional approaches, connect theory to practice to design rich learning experiences, and will explore a range of teaching strategies and resources to support learning goals. Finally, pre-service teachers will think critically about how lesson plan structure and instructional approaches affect how children in the primary years engage in the learning process and acquire new knowledge and understanding.
