Content
In this Unit students will be introduced to assessment of the more common mental state problems that fall under the umbrella term “mental health”. The characteristics of the more common mental health problems will be presented as will how the characteristics manifest in the classroom and how they may be identified. Students will develop an understanding of how the various mental health issues faced by students affect their learning and social development as well as their overall general wellbeing. Topics will include a consideration of anxiety and depression issues in education contexts.
Outcomes
Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of the impact mental health problems have on the developing child and adolescent in terms of learning, social development and general wellbeing.; (2) demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of mental health problems and how they are assessed.; (3) evaluate various instruments (both narrowband and broadband) that are commonly used to assess the more common mental health problems and be able to interpret the data.; and (4) apply their knowledge to use the data from the instruments to create interventions to support students experiencing mental health problems..
Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) research paper and (2) case study. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Note
For assignment 1 students will write on a topical issue in mental health outlining the issue, discussing its assessment and identification, and citing relevant research. Students may choose from a list of possible issues which will be provided, or they may write about an issue of their own choosing after consultation with the unit supervisor.

For the presentation the students will work as a pair or group of three to prepare and present on a topic relevant to student mental health and wellness. Each student will present for 20 minutes and will then set tasks or questions for the group related to their presentation.

The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook one week prior the commencement of study. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
