EDUC5485 Development, Teaching and Learning: Theory and Practice

Availability Location Mode Semester 1 UWA (Perth) Multi-mode
- Students explore theories and evidence to develop a framework by which to understand student's learning and their social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Components of the unit are differentiated to allow students to apply their learning to secondary levels.
- Students are able to (1) examine and analyse key evidence, concepts and theories in child development (physical, emotional, social and intellectual) from adolescence to young adulthood; (2) develop and use resources for teaching and learning, including ICTs and other educational technologies; (3) explain the strengths and needs of students from diverse backgrounds and across the full range of abilities and how a teacher would apply that information to teaching and learning; (4) explain theories related to child development and pedagogy, as well as teaching and learning practices, and assess how theory and practice can be applied to particular school contexts; and (5) explain the role of major figures in the field of education and assess their impact on current theory and practice.
- Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) critical reflection; (2) case study; and (3) workshop presentation and participation. Further information is available in the unit outline.
To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the critical reflection, case study, and workshop presentation and participation components.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit.
