This unit provides an introduction to the analysis of two-dimensional determinate and indeterminate beam, truss and frame structures under the actions of external loading, thermal loading, prescribed displacements, the force (flexibility) and displacement (stiffness) methods, and the matrix stiffness method. Focus is on the elastic behaviour of structures.
Students are able to (1) successfully complete teamwork; (2) communicate the results of an analysis by constructing bending moment, shear force and axial force diagrams; (3) document calculations; (4) understand the role of analysis in the design process; (5) analyse statically determinate and indeterminate bars, trusses, beams and rigid jointed frames; (6) analyse beams and rigid jointed frames with internal hinges; (7) analyse trusses, beams and rigid jointed frames under the action of thermal loading; (8) include shear deformation in the analysis of beams and rigid jointed frames; (9) include prescribed displacements in the analysis of trusses, beams and rigid jointed frames; and (10) understand how two-dimensional analysis procedures may be extended to three-dimensions.
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) continual coursework assessment; (2) a mid-semester examination; and (3) a final examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 overall and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
