HERI5103 The Business of Sustainable Heritage

- This unit offers a practical overview of how to run a financially sustainable heritage business. It looks at museums, heritage centres, public heritage sites and probes a range of good business practices that can lay the groundwork for financial sustainability. It also explores the most common reasons for financial failure and the practices that can help to avoid common mistakes. Students look at payroll, financial management and reporting, tax and auditing. Subsidy models are considered and grant funding options explored, along with case studies in successful income generation.
- Students are able to (1) write a business plan for a heritage business; (2) know the basics of good heritage business practice; (3) understand common mistakes in heritage business management and how to avoid them; and (4) evaluate the pros and cons of different heritage business models.
- Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) a research project; (2) class participation; and (3) in-class exercises. Further information is available in the unit outline.

The unit outline will be available via the LMS and the UWA Handbook. Reading lists and essential textbooks are subject to change each semester. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus. Copies of textbooks and other readings will be made available for students to access from the Library, online wherever possible as well as in print.
