Unit Overview

Description

This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including their international foundations, specific content and global impact. The unit is divided into three parts: (1) the development of international law and policy leading to the adoption of the SDGs in response to global concerns; (2) the detailed content of all 17 SDGs and the links between each SDG and UN member State international law obligations; and (3) an analysis of commitments made by governments, industry and civil society, outcomes to date and how the achievement of the SDGs could be advanced further. Prior experience in producing written work would be beneficial for students enrolling in this unit.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) explain the origins of the SDGs and their role in achieving global UN goals; (2) synthesize knowledge of the 17 SDGs and critically analyse their relationship with international law and policy; (3) assess the significance and effectiveness of the SDGs at the global and national level; (4) demonstrate advanced oral and written communication skills ; and (5) develop and apply skills in independent scholarly research.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) participation and engagement; (2) short answer paper; and (3) research project. Further information is available in the unit outline.



Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.
