Unit Overview

Description

What sets Homo sapiens apart, more than our forms of social organisation, cultural expression or toolmaking capabilities, is our capacity to communicate through language. This unit introduces students to fundamental concepts in the study of language, with an emphasis on language as a symbolic system and as a form of human (inter)action. Each topic is presented alongside a consideration of the language technologies used to train Artificial Intelligence (AI) to recognise, categorise and use language. The unit introduces students to semiotics, pragmatics and to the analysis of linguistic structure, focusing on English. Topics include the nature of language and the contrast between human and non-human communication systems including AI-powered models. The unit also introduces students to semiotics, pragmatics and the linguistic analysis of language structure.
