- This unit provides an introduction to the study of language in its social and cultural setting, language as used by speakers to create and manipulate their social world, and how the structure of language reflects the uses to which it is put within a particular cultural context. Topics include discussion of the relationship between language and culture, cultural reflections in language through the use of conventionalised metaphor, language and gender, and sociolinguistic variation within and across speech communities.
- Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between language and culture; (2) describe key concepts in sociolinguistics and features of major approaches to language variation in social context; and (3) demonstrate an understanding of sociolinguistic concepts and methods as employed in designing, implementing and reporting the results of an original research project.
- Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) tutorial participation; (2) assignments; and (3) examination. Further information is available in the unit outline.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 overall and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
