Unit Overview

Description

This practical unit builds on MUSC1741 and further consolidates essential musicianship, technical skills and repertoire in either composition or performance.

For composers the emphasis is on further development of technique, application of conceptual knowledge of compositional techniques, and experimentation in compositional style/s and scoring. For performers the emphasis is upon further development of instrumental technique and performance skills.

This unit prepares students for the next unit in the sequence, MUSC2741 Practical Studies C, or to transition to MUSC1342 Principal Studies 2 within the Music Specialist Studies major.

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate competence in composition or instrumental technique according to specialisation; (2) composers: (a) apply the conventions of music notation for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, as well ensemble scoring; (b) demonstrate fundamental compositional techniques for the development of simple musical material; (c) demonstrate understanding of acoustic instruments, their capabilities and limitations; and (d) apply knowledge and awareness of repertoire and historical approaches to composition appropriate to the level of the unit; and (3) performers: (a) demonstrate developing control of intonation, rhythm, accuracy, articulation, tonal quality; (b) apply more advanced use of phrasing, dynamic control and general expression through performance of appropriate technical work; (c) demonstrate more advanced knowledge of relevant repertoire through preparation of technical work, etudes and vocal/instrumental literature appropriate to this developing level of tertiary performance.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) composition stream: composition projects, assignments, and tests; OR performance stream: a solo repertoire examination and (2) composition stream: workshop participation and experimental performance; OR performance stream: online component including readings and tests. Further information is available in the unit outline.

To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the composition stream: composition projects, assignments, and tests; OR performance stream: a solo repertoire examination component.

Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Information on essential textbooks will also be made available on the Essential Textbooks. This website is updated regularly in the lead up to semester so content may change. It is recommended that students purchase essential textbooks for convenience due to the frequency with which they will be required during the unit. A limited number of textbooks will be made available from the Library in print and will also be made available online wherever possible. Essential textbooks can be purchased from the commercial vendors to secure the best deal. The Student Guild can provide assistance on where to purchase books if required. Books can be purchased second hand at the Guild Secondhand bookshop (second floor, Guild Village), which is located on campus.
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
