Unit Overview
- Description
This unit is taken over two successive semesters and parts 1 and 2 must be completed to fulfil the requirements of the unit. Students undertake a research project under the supervision of an academic or audiological professional approved by the unit coordinator. The research project forms an integral part of the master's degree course. Students conduct research in one of the following fields: (1) physiology or psychoacoustics of hearing; (2) epidemiology of hearing loss; (3) the sociological consequences of hearing impairment; (4) treatment strategies of hearing impairment; or (5) audiological practice in the community or workplace. Projects are chosen by the student in collaboration with an accredited supervisor and are undertaken after submission of a research plan to the unit coordinator as well as a presentation of a seminar. In order to pass the unit, a pass is required in the written proposal/seminar, the final seminar and the written report.

Students are able to (1) explain the goals of research in audiology and related fields; (2) explain the process of planning research, including determination of research needs, literature searching, critical appraisal of previous research, wide consultation, estimation of achievability of research goals and contingency planning; (3) explain the process of budgeting for research; (4) explain the processes of data collection and analysis, and the importance of an unbiased approach and appropriate statistical analysis; and (5) explain the importance of ethics in research and research design, the many issues that impact on ethical research processes and data management, and the importance of the research proposal and ethics committee clearance before research.
- Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) ethics application; (2) literature review; and (3) online research modules. Further information is available in the unit outline.
To pass this unit, a student must: (a) achieve an overall mark of 50 per cent or higher for the unit; and (b) achieve the requisite requirements(s) or a mark of 50 per cent or greater, whichever is higher and specified in the unit outline, for the ethics application, literature review, and online research modules components.
Student may be offered supplementary assessment in this unit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Online flexible
100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit is asynchronous delivery, with NO requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online timetabled
100% Online Unit. NO campus face-to-face attendance is required to complete this unit. All study requirements are online only. Unit includes some synchronous components, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times.
Online Restricted
Not available for self-enrolment. Students access this mode by contacting their student office through AskUWA. 100% Online Unit.
NO campus face-to-face attendance. All study and assessment requirements are online only. Unit includes some timetabled activities, with a requirement for students to participate online at specific times. In exceptional cases (noted in the Handbook) students may be required to participate in face-to-face laboratory classes when a return to UWA’s Crawley campus becomes possible in order to be awarded a final grade.
External
No attendance or regular contact is required, and all study requirements are completed either via correspondence and/or online submission.
Off-campus
Regular attendance is not required, but student attends the institution face to face on an agreed schedule for purposes of supervision and/or instruction.
Multi-mode
Multiple modes of delivery. Unit includes a mix of online and on-campus study requirements. On campus attendance for some activities is required to complete this unit.
